The #ReleaseTheSnyderCut movement for Justice League hit San Diego Comic-Con 2019 in another big way, with a banner flying over the convention. Following Zack Snyder’s departure from his third DC movie, fans of the sometimes divisive filmmaker soon began to wonder if his vision would be changed. Joss Whedon was brought aboard to do reshoots and complete the edit, and when Justice League arrived in theaters in late 2017, it was clear that a decent amount of the movie had been altered.

This gave Justice League a Frankenstein-production feeling, where some elements, scenes, and shots were clearly Snyder, but were a direct contrast to what Whedon and Warner Bros. changed. The result has been fans of Snyder doing their part to promote the possible release of Snyder’s actual cut of the movie; one he has confirmed does exist - just not in a 100 percent completed form. The #ReleaseTheSnyderCut campaign has done several different events over the last year and a half, and now their focus is on SDCC.

As part of what they’ve called “Project Comic-Con,” the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut campaign raised funds to promote the Snyder Cut of Justice League at SDCC, arguably the biggest pop culture event of the year. They raised thousands of dollars to support their efforts at SDCC and donated half of everything they earned to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Most recently, they used their fundings to pay for a banner to be flown by plane over SDCC, as captured by THR’s Patrick Shanley, that reads “WB #ReleaseTheSnyderCut of Justice League.”

The #ReleaseTheSnyderCut banner is one of many forms of advertising that the campaign planned for SDCC. Right as the event was beginning, a billboard and bus stop ads popped up near the convention center, so people traveling to SDCC - or even just casual bystanders - would learn about the cause. They also have a scavenger hunt set up at the convention where attendees can win DC merchandise and other prizes. With the banner added to this display, the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut movement has received plenty of attention. This isn’t the first time they’ve used a banner to get their message across either, as the previously had one fly over the WB offices in California and were even noticed by Snyder himself.

Despite the best efforts of the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut group, there still has not been any significant movement on the actual possibility of Snyder’s version of Justice League being released. Since we are less than two years removed from the movie and WB and DC are still making movies with many of those characters, the release of a longer, very different version of the film could be confusing for casual fans. It could be several years before WB decides to let the Snyder Cut free, if they ever do at all. That said, there are alternate methods of release (like animation or graphic novels) that could satisfy fans and maybe even let Snyder complete his overall story. But, one day, the actual Snyder Cut of Justice League could be released, and there is no harm in fans showing their support this way.
