This article contains minor spoilers for Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice

-

As Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice crests the $600 million mark, speculation about what happens next in the DC Extended Universe is rife across the fan world. Will Batfleck’s standalone Batman be fast tracked for an earlier release? How will the solo superhero movies like Wonder Woman and Aquaman connect with the the overall Justice League two-parter? And what exactly will those Justice League movies be about?

Initial hints from Batman V Superman suggested that Darkseid is set to become the main villain. But according to fanboy reporter El Mayimbe, Justice League Part One might be a little more aquatic.

Once again, although only rumors, the possibility of a war with Atlantis isn’t entirely unbelievable. Geoff Johns, one of the movers and shakers in the DCEU, penned the 2012 Throne of Atlantis comic book series, which deals with a war between the Atlanteans and surface-dwellers. The story arc involves Aquaman coming into his own as both the King of Atlantis and features the Justice League’s involvement. As initial shots of Aquaman (Jason Momoa) from Batman V Superman don’t show him looking particularly happy to see outsiders, the rumors aren’t completely implausible.

These hints are, once more, nothing but rumors at this point. Without a revealed source, they’re nearly impossible to fact check. Still, they do offer an intriguing overarching concept for the upcoming DCEU. The Justice League movie will be a two-parter, and although there’s plenty of source material to pull from for a two-part Darkseid battle, a war with Atlantis could begin in the first film and carry into the following year’s Aquaman. The war could be resolved over the course of the standalone, in lieu of a new, impending threat, thereby fomenting the final Justice League team for its concluding chapter’s release the following year.

Despite being an interesting theory, that’s really all these rumors are thus far. All early teasers and Easter eggs, especially the Cyborg/possible “mother box” montage, as well as Lex Luthor’s trance and suggestions that “He” or “Him” is coming from beyond the stars, point to an upcoming war with Darkseid and Apokalips. Set reveals from Aquaman and Justice League Part One as they start filming – as well as Wonder Woman – will likely confirm whether there’s any truth to the rumors.

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice is now playing in U.S. theaters. Suicide Squad will arrive on August 5, 2016, followed by Wonder Woman on June 23, 2017; Justice League Part One on November 17, 2017; The Flash on March 16, 2018; Aquaman on July 27, 2018; Shazam on April 5, 2019; Justice League Part Two on June 14, 2019; Cyborg on April 3, 2020; and Green Lantern Corps. on June 19, 2020.
