Director Colin Trevorrow says Jurassic World 3 won’t include any new hybrid dinosaurs. Technically speaking, of course, all the dinosaurs in the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World movies are “hybrid dinosaurs” in a sense. This was even addressed by the Henry Wu character in Jurassic World, when he pointed out both Jurassic Park and Jurassic World (the establishments) featured dinosaurs whose genomes include DNA from other animals.

“Hybrid dinosaur”, in the context of the Jurassic movie franchise, specifically refers to dinosaurs that are the result of human scientists blending DNA from multiple dinosaurs and other creatures (ranging from cuttlefish to tree frogs), in order to create a brand-new type of dino. Jurassic World introduced the concept to the series with the Indominus Rex, a creature officially designed to serve as a shiny new attraction to draw more guests to the eponymous dinosaur park. The film eventually revealed that the Indominous was really engineered for a more nefarious purpose than even basic corporate greed.

Next month’s sequel, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, will up the ante further by introducing an even more dangerous hybrid dinosaur called the Indoraptor. Trevorrow has now informed Total Film (h/t Bloody Disgusting) the Indoraptor will be the last of these hybrid monsters and that Jurassic World 3 won’t introduce any new ones into the mix. He also teased that the third Jurassic World (which he’s cowriting with Pacific Rim Uprising’s Emily Carmichael) will take a “back to basics” approach in other respects:

“I’m looking forward to, in the third film, getting a little back into the Paleontological, wild animal, true dinosaur nature of all of it."

This isn’t the first time Trevorrow has indicated that Jurassic World 3 will take a “back to basics” approach to the franchise. He previously described the film as a “science thriller” and compared it to the original Jurassic Park movie in that sense. By comparison, Fallen Kingdom director J.A. Bayona has described his film as being a disaster thriller that, halfway through, evolves into a horror film where it’s the Indoraptor running around killing people, as opposed to a more typical human slasher movie villain.

Those who aren’t fans of the Indominus Rex and/or the very concept of hybrid dinosaurs should be glad to hear that Jurassic World 3 will focus on old-school “real” dinosaurs instead. The idea of hybrid dinosaurs has always been a contentious one, if only because it moves the franchise too far into the realm of sci-fi monster movies and away from its “science thriller” roots. It doesn’t look like Fallen Kingdom’s Indoraptor is going to change anyone’s stance on the issue either, so it’s probably for the best that Trevorrow abandon the idea altogether for the conclusion to his trilogy.
