There are a number of stories going around about the production of Jurassic World 2. The upcoming dinosaur sequel is said to be scarier, is rumored to be the most expensive films ever, will serve as the second part of a trilogy - and aims to justify its own existence by continuing on with themes originated by Jurassic Park author Michael Crichton. That is a lot to accomplish, especially when considering fans have no real idea what the story is supposed to be.
In addition to being one of the highest-grossing films ever, 2015’s Jurassic World manage to tell a story that both capitalized on a level of nostalgia for the first film, in addition to being fitting commentary on capitalism. It now seems that an underlying theme of this upcoming sequel, which provides some hints in regards to the movie’s plot too, has been revealed.
The Jurassic World sequel will be directed by J.A. Bayona (A Monster Calls), but Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow is still onboard as co-writer and shared some thoughts on issues the upcoming sequel will be tackling (per Time):
“The dinosaurs will be a parable of the treatment animals receive today: the abuse, medical experimentation, pets, having wild animals in zoos like prisons, the use the military has made of them, animals as weapons. The second part will be a very different movie that will explore new paths. For that reason, it was clear that it needed to be Bayona who would direct it, in order to have it grow and evolve with his very personal vision.”
Since Jurassic World features a story about an operational dinosaur park, it does allow for ideas of where things could go next. A term Trevorrow used in 2015 was “open source,” meaning that corporations other than InGen had the ability to make their own dinosaurs. Given that B.D. Wong’s character was able to escape the island with dino-ingredients in the previous film, it stands to reason that the animal abuse theme could match with the possibility of seeing rival parks opening up and not knowing how to properly handle what they have in their cages. That’s major speculation, but just one of the routes a new sequel that continues to feature Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard could go.
Regardless of whatever the story turns out to be, there is a strong amount of potential in the results. While some had more mixed opinions than others on the film, Jurassic World did work for a good number of people to some extent, as evidenced by its massive $1.6 billion worldwide gross. One could only hope a sequel with a director as strong as Bayona will be able to at least match what was brought out in the first and properly dig into these new themes - just as Jurassic World was able to layer its disaster-din0-adventure story with an interesting look at business-mined social commentary.
One just has to hope the huge budget and studio expectation doesn’t compromise the film in a way that focuses more on spectacle than story. Of course, this is a film about dinosaurs being brought back to life, so it will be hard to avoid a certain level of spectacle. Ideally the filmmakers will just be able to find a way to keep a level of control over everything. Much like life, hopefully this film will find a way.
