Dwayne Johnson posted a new image on social media today expressing his excitement about his upcoming Disney film, Jungle Cruise. The upcoming project comes from director Jaume Collet Serra (The Shallows) and screenwriter Michael Green (Logan), who wrote the most recent draft of the screenplay.
Jungle Cruise is, of course, based on the iconic ride of the same name that has been operating within Adventureland inside Disneyland since the theme park opened way back in 1955. And considering how successful Disney has been with their Pirates of the Caribbean series over the years, it’s surprising that it has taken so long for the attraction to get its own movie adaptation. But now, it’s finally moving forward with Dwayne Johnson at the forefront - and he’s arguably the best person to bring this new world to life on the big screen.
Disney’s Jungle Cruise is slated to start filming this month, and it looks like Dwayne Johnson and his fellow producers are breaking down the script one more time before they move forward. The actor posted an image on Instagram - of himself, Jaume Collet Serra, Justin Haythe, Beau Flynn, Hiram Garcia, and Scott Sheldon - showing them discussing the script. Take a look:
What’s interesting about Dwayne Johnson’s caption is that he mentions that they’re building a new world with this movie. Considering that several of Johnson’s previous films have received sequels, it’s possible that Disney is looking at this movie as their Pirates of the Caribbean replacement. Why else would they go for an actor with as a big as Johnson, who was reportedly paid a whopping $22 million for the upcoming movie Red Notice?
It’s worth noting that the above photo is not a script read but rather a script breakdown; notice that the other actors and actresses aren’t present. While there’s still quite a bit that’s unknown about the movie, Johnson stars in the titular role as a boat captain who reportedly take his sister (Emily Blunt) and her brother (Jack Whitehall) on an adventure to uncover a tree with magical healing powers. Jesse Plemons and Edgar Ramirez both co-star in the film as the villains, with Paul Giamatti reportedly playing a “crusty harbormaster.”
Although there hasn’t been much news surrounding Jungle Cruise, aside from casting reveals, audiences should soon find out more as production ramps up and with Johnson and the rest of the cast revealing small bits of information during the filming process. And with filming beginning soon, it stands to reason that the movie will release sometime in either late 2019 or early 2020.
