Julianne Hough followed up the America’s Got Talent controversy with a musical return after her New Year’s Eve Show. The Footloose actress hopes to record new music in 2020, following a lengthy hiatus from singing.

After a triumphant performance of her single “Transform” on the September finale of America’s Got Talent, Hough looked to be in the throes of a comeback. However, she and costar Gabrielle Union were fired from the competition show shortly thereafter. Hough was mostly silent during the subsequent fallout, while her terminated America’s Got Talent costar Gabrielle Union used the publicity to incite change within the show and throughout the NBC network. Hough had a holiday special with brother Derek (World of Dance) already on the roster, as well as the New Year’s Eve telecast, opposite Carson Daly to look forward to. Finally, she took to the stage with her squad of background dancers and continued her road back to career redemption.

After her performance, Hough posted an emotional message about the experience to Instagram. She said:

Hough had a promising musical career after reaching the pinnacle of success as a ballroom dancer. While on Dancing With the Stars, she had a hit single called “Will You Dance With Me” that was released on iTunes and made available through Walmart. The song cracked the Billboard 100 chart and led to Hough getting signed to Universal Music Group Nashville’s Mercury Nashville division. She followed this accomplishment with her 2008 self-titled album, which peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200. Hough was nominated for and won multiple awards for her recordings and it looked as though music would be the next summit she would conquer. Around the same time, her acting career skyrocketed and brought her roles in the remake of Footloose, Burlesque, as well as the Tom Cruise-led musical, Rock of Ages.  However, by 2012, following the completion of her second album, Hough announced that it would not be released right away, but promised that when the time was right, she would return to music. Apparently, that time is now.

“Ending the year and the decade with these powerful feminine forces!! These women truly embody transformation. Not by changing themselves, but by bringing in their entire being, everything they are and what it means to be a woman today. It just feels right to be starting the new year with these women by my side,” Hough began, tagging those around her “who [work] behind the scenes to bring this magic to life” and finalized the heartfelt thanks with, “Feeling extra grateful for my team.”

Julianne Hough is a woman who has put her career first. In doing so, she just might spend 2020 in an enviable position. While it was concerning that she wasn’t more vocal about the alleged problematic goings on during the America’s Got Talent controversy, that decision might actually pay off for her professionally. Hough’s return to the limelight during NBC’s New Year’s Eve celebration, as well as her choice to start recording music again, shows that she’s got long-term goals that supersede personal feelings. Her instincts have served her well in the beginning of her career, so let’s hope that for this comeback, her game plan is just as successful.
