Deadpool 2 is creeping closer and according to Josh Brolin, who plays Cable, fans can expect to see the protector of the mutant messiah in three more films. The sequel to Deadpool is introducing a lot of elements expected to expand the X-Men universe, including the introduction of a number of new mutants. The film seems to be teasing a broader look at the X-Men universe, presumably with Deadpool’s characteristic charm and flare.

From new teasers spotlighting Cable and Domino, new members to Deadpool’s team, to the potential introduction of a new X-man poised to be a major player in the X-Men universe, there are a lot of plot threads to be tied up for fans. With the film tracking below the original Deadpool for ticket sales, some might be concerned about the future of the Merc with a Mouth. Fox is clearly hedging its bets behind Wade Wilson, his team, and the future arc that Cable will bring to any X-Men story.

That’s probably why, according to a new interview with Josh Brolin in Empire magazine, Cable is signed on for three more films making up a four-film arc for the character. The actor, notorious for disliking franchises, can be caught on screen twice this summer both in Deadpool 2 and Avengers: Infinity War as Thanos, but his arc as Cable at least seems to have a definitive end. According to Brolin, Fox is thinking of Cable in “four movie terms.” He said:

It’s pretty likely that Cable will return in any potential Deadpool 3, but the mutant could also appear in X-Force and any eventual sequel to that film as well. Brolin clearly points out four films, and as the X-Men universe tightens itself in preparation for the eventual Disney/Fox merger the onus is on Brolin and the teams behind any X-men films to tighten up their stories if they don’t want any plans to change when joining Disney.

We think about it in four movie terms. We tried to think of Cable as a full arc, not just in this movie, but in the trajectory of four films. That made it a lot more fun for me. I don’t like the idea of a franchise, personally, That’s what makes the Thanos thing really great. It’s a finite thing, and I like that."

Brolin at least will have plenty of experience with the Disney side of the business if the merger goes through and his four-film arc continues as planned. Thanks to the merger, fans should expect X-Force, but also feel free to speculate. While Cable is likely to make an appearance in the X-Force film, anything is on the table. Disney could include a look at the X-Men’s future and feature Bishop and Hope Summers, Cable’s charge.

Anything is possible as the universe expands. Brolin seems to confirm a four-film tour for Cable, which gives him plenty of time to wrap up a satisfactory arc for the character. Whether it ends with X-Force and Deadpool, or it takes fans to Cable’s far-flung and dangerous future to give Hope Summers a spotlight will remain to be seen. In the meantime, fans can expect a raucous introduction to Cable with Deadpool 2.
